What Is an Oral Cancer Screening?
An oral cancer screening is a visual and physical examination of your mouth, throat, and surrounding tissues to detect abnormalities that may indicate cancer or precancerous conditions. During this quick and painless assessment, your dentist looks for unusual changes in color, texture, or structure of the soft tissues in your mouth. Early detection is critical when it comes to oral cancer. The Oral Cancer Foundation reports that when detected in the earliest stages, oral cancer has a 70 to 90 percent survival rate. Regular screenings help identify potential problems before they develop into more serious conditions, making them an essential part of your preventive care routine. Oral cancer can grow in any area of the mouth and throat, including the:- Lips
- Tongue
- Floor of the mouth
- Cheeks
- Gums
- Roof of the mouth
- Tonsils
- Salivary glands
What Happens During an Oral Cancer Screening?
During your oral cancer screening at Lumin8 Dentistry, Dr. Carrington will carefully examine all areas of your mouth and throat. The screening typically includes a visual inspection of your lips, gums, tongue, cheeks, and the roof and floor of your mouth. A physical examination to feel for lumps, bumps, or unusual masses in your neck and jaw area. An assessment of any sores, white or red patches, or other abnormalities, and an evaluation of your throat and tonsil area for any concerning changes. The entire process takes just a few minutes and causes no discomfort. If any suspicious areas are identified, Dr. Carrington may suggest additional testing or send you to a specialist for evaluation. Most findings are benign, but catching any potential issues early provides the best possible outcome. During the visual portion of the exam, your dentist will use a bright light and may ask you to stick out your tongue or move it in different directions to examine all surfaces. The physical examination involves gentle palpation of your neck, jaw, and under your chin to check for swollen lymph nodes or unusual masses. This hands-on approach allows your dentist to detect changes beneath the surface that aren’t visible to the naked eye.Who Should Get Oral Cancer Screenings?
